New development
HM Government announced on Tuesday 17 May that it plans to publish legislation “in the coming weeks” to make unilateral changes to how the Northern Ireland Protocol is implemented in practice.
The protocol is a set of unique rules for trade between Great Britain and NI that formed part of the Withdrawal Agreement, designed to prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland.
Retaliatory measures
The European Union has signalled that it will respond to any UK government move to override parts of the protocol with retaliatory measures against UK trade.
Measures could include (see Q7 in the survey attached here):
- Tariffs on your goods being exported to the EU
- Tariffs on goods you purchase from the EU
- Increased certification standards
