The issue of customs competency has gained focus over recent months, as a result of the introduction of the Union Customs Code (UCC) and Brexit negotiations.
The UCC has placed greater emphasis on Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status as the benchmark for companies wishing to take advantage of customs and supply chain simplifications and reduced customs guarantee requirements.
AEO status is likely to become significant in facilitating fast-track customs procedures in a post-Brexit custom environment. Yet, the UK currently lags way behind its soon-to-be European competitors in the number of AEO accredited companies it boasts. Compared to Germany, which has over 6000 companies with AEO status, the UK only has around 600. Given that UK companies will soon be competing against companies from countries like Germany for position in International supply chains, this is something that needs to be rectified in the coming years.

Any businesses wishing to apply for status as Authorised Economic Operators, must demonstrate that the person in charge of customs matters meets a standard of competence in customs matters.
