As the end of the UK’s transition from the EU approaches on 31 December this year, the government has announced a further extension of its financial support to train for new customs requirements from 1 January 2021.
The number of customs staffs needed to get Britain ready for post-transition has been estimated as 50,000, though the Institute of Export & International Trade believes the actual number to be many multiples of this in 2021 and beyond.
The training provided by the IOE&IT that can be funded by the HMRC grant includes:

- Customs Classification and Tariff Codes
- Understanding Rules of Origin, Free Trade Agreement and Export Preference
- Introduction to Exporting
- Introduction to Importing
- Advanced Exporting
- Advanced Importing
- Brexit compliance Authorised Economic Operator
- NCTS Transit
- Customs Warehousing, Excise Warehousing and Temporary Storage
How do I apply?
When you apply, you’ll be asked for the following details relating to your business:
- registered name and number
- contact details
- VAT number (if this applies)
- Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
- most recent utility bill
You’ll also be asked for:
- a quote for the cost of the training
- the CV of the trainer if the trainer will be delivered internally
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is administering the grants for HMRC.
