Kirsten Donkin, PD Ports’ Head of PR, marketing and communications: “As we enter our third year of the Northern Powerhouse Export Awards, in partnership with BQ, we’re looking forward to highlighting the fantastic businesses exporting from our region.
“As one of the UK’s major port groups headquartered in the North East, the only continuous net exporting region in the UK, we see the critical importance export plays in the vital growth of the economy.
“With an uncertain year ahead for the country and the necessity for us as an island nation to stay competitive as we trade overseas, there has never been a better time to showcase the North and celebrate the worthy exporting success.
“The Northern Powerhouse export awards is a chance to profile the outstanding entrepreneurial exporting achievements from across the North whilst encouraging others to increase their export potential. They acknowledge the innovation, hard work and success of businesses large and small in reaching new global markets; emphasising their importance to the Northern and national economies.”
Director general for exports, DIT, John Mahon, said: “Exports have helped propel the value of the Northern Powerhouse economy to £330bn - greater than the economies of Austria, Belgium or Norway. The market for high quality, innovative products and services from our great Northern businesses is international, and we’re delighted to see the success of our local companies being celebrated through the Northern Powerhouse Export Awards.
“We recently launched our Export Strategy, which sets out how the government will support businesses of all sizes to make the most of the opportunities presented by markets around the world. However, it is just the start – in the months ahead DIT will lead the work across government to assess what more we can do to support the export performance of UK businesses.”
