Our Director of Special Projects, Mike Josypenko, shared his top exporting tips with an audience of industry experts at Europe’s premier recycling and waste management event.
Mike joined high profile speakers, including Sir Stuart Rose and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles MP, at the Resource Efficiency and Waste Management Solutions Exhibition (RWM) in Birmingham.
Mike’s seminar, Three Steps to Export Success, attracted a strong audience and was designed to give an overview on exporting. The key areas he outlined were: effective preparation and research, understanding the potential of the product to be exported and researching overseas markets.
He also discussed how to find the relevant routes to market and the best way to identify and meet potential clients. Other important aspects of overseas trading put under the spotlight included: getting paid, protecting intellectual property and understanding processes and regulations.
Said Mike: “The underlying message I hope my audience took away with them is how critical it is for businesses to do their research before embarking on exporting, and that they really need to know how their product works in the domestic market first.
“Effective management and recycling of waste is a growing industry worldwide, and the UK has innovative technologies which are in demand both in advanced, ecologically aware countries and in the fast growing developing markets, such as China, India, and Brazil. It is important that companies get it right, particularly in the more complex markets. Many companies embark on overseas trading without really thinking about the processes involved. For instance, they are approached by clients and may start trading before understanding the complexities and risks.”
The IOE was asked to lead the seminar by our academic partner Anglia Ruskin University, with whom we run the Foundation Degree in Professional Practice of International Trade.
A total of 750 exhibitors, including the university, took part in the two day event which was dedicated to resource efficiency and waste management solutions.
